The People’s Solar, a crowd-funding platform for community-based solar projects, is a partnership between energy services company, Energy for the People, and one of the leading not-for-profit organisations in Australia’s sustainability space, the Alternative Technology Association.
The People’s Solar partners with businesses, NGOs, community groups and other organisations to identify, design, finance and implement community solar projects, paid for via tax-deductible, crowdfunded donations. Energy savings are reinvested in communities – a “Community Dividend” - ensuring the financial benefits of solar projects support the specific needs of local communities.
The People’s Solar is currently undertaking a unique fund-raising campaign with St Kilda Community Housing, to install solar power, battery storage, hot water upgrades and a green roof. St Kilda Community Housing intend to use the resulting Community Dividend, of over $5,000 per annum, to reduce rents and provide training for tenants, via their property maintenance social enterprise, T2M.
The People’s Solar aims to raise $30,000, as a first step, to install a 15kW solar system on the roof of 56 Jackson Street, St Kilda, coupled with LED lighting upgrades. This will create a Community Dividend of as much as $5,000 per annum, which can support training for up to five social housing tenants per year, and over 100 tenants over the life of the solar system (savings of over $100,000 over 20 years).
In other words, for every $300 invested today, at least one social housing tenant at risk of homelessness, will have the opportunity to be trained and employed in meaningful work - a compelling investment in anyone’s language. The fact that The People’s Solar does it using clean energy, makes it all the more remarkable.
